Canon C50 rumors heat up: 32MP full-frame cinema camera with open gate to debut Sept. 9

Canon is rumored to be preparing a new cinema camera that could serve as a direct competitor to the much-speculated Canon C50. In a recent Instagram post from Canon USA, the camera is teased to be officially announced on September 9, 2025.

Early reports suggest it may feature a 32MP full-frame sensor, positioning it as a potential successor to the Canon R5C while directly challenging Sony’s popular FX line of compact cinema cameras.

The leaks, shared by Mirrorless Rumors and Ordinary Filmmaker on YouTube, trace back to a filmmaking YouTuber who reportedly tested the device. Footage from a leaked video hints at a design inspired by the Sony FX3, further suggesting Canon’s intent to appeal to indie filmmakers and content creators who value portability without sacrificing professional-grade video features.

One of the most intriguing details is the possibility of ‘open gate’ recording support. This would let videographers capture the full height of the sensor, providing more flexibility for reframing, anamorphic shooting, and future-proof content creation. If confirmed, this would be a significant step for Canon, as open gate has typically been reserved for higher-end cinema cameras.

Adding to the anticipation, leaks also suggest Canon may launch a second model alongside the rumored full-frame version. Speculation points to an APS-C variant, offering a more affordable entry point similar to the Sony FX30.

With both models expected to debut on September 9, Canon’s upcoming announcement could mark a major shake-up in the compact cinema camera market.
