Sony has announced two new G Master™ super telephoto prime lenses for its Alpha™ full-frame E-mount system: the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS.
Both lenses are claimed to be the world’s lightest in their respective categories as of Sony’s September 2026 announcement. The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS weighs approximately 994g, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS weighs approximately 995g, excluding the tripod mount.
Designed for handheld shooting, the lenses feature a compact build and optimized weight balance that places the centre of gravity closer to the camera body. This makes it easier to maintain framing, track moving subjects and pan while shooting birds, wildlife and sports.
The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS measures approximately 108mm in diameter and 242mm long, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS measures 108mm in diameter and 263mm long.
G Master image quality
Both lenses use three Super ED glass elements and one ED glass element to reduce chromatic aberration and deliver high resolution across the frame. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II also helps reduce flare and ghosting, including when shooting against backlight.
An 11-blade circular aperture, combined with optimized spherical aberration, produces the smooth bokeh associated with Sony’s G Master lineup.

Fast autofocus and image stabilization
Two XD Linear Motors and a dedicated control algorithm provide fast, precise and quiet autofocus for tracking moving subjects.
Both lenses are compatible with the Alpha 9 III’s continuous shooting of up to 120 fps with AF/AE tracking, based on Sony’s test conditions.
Built-in optical image stabilization also helps reduce camera shake during handheld shooting. The lenses additionally support compatible camera bodies with Active Mode stabilization, coordinated image stabilization and breathing compensation for video.
Built for outdoor shooting
The lenses feature four customizable focus hold buttons, along with a function ring, focus range limiter, Full-time DMF switch, focus mode switch and image stabilization mode switch.
Both are also compatible with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. With the 1.4x teleconverter, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS can reach 560mm, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS reaches 840mm. With the 2x teleconverter, they can reach 800mm and 1200mm, respectively.
A dust and moisture resistant design and fluorine coating on the front element provide additional protection for outdoor shooting.
